In July, the government announced that it was looking to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK, meaning only hybrid, electric and perhaps hydrogen vehicles would be seen in showrooms from 2040.

The move echoes a position by France, while other countries are also investigating similar bans. Following the diesel scandal of 2015, emissions has become a byword for poor air quality. However, it is not necessarily a good thing to introduce a ban, when automotive manufacturers are being pushed to develop cleaner technologies, which could see traditional internal combustion engines come much cleaner, and less polluting, by the time the new rules are introduced.

In this video for my automotive site All Torque, I explain the issues surrounding the ban, and discuss whether it really will help the UK meet its clean air targets.
